About Hillcrest Ubuntu
Who We Are
Hillcrest Ubuntu is a closed public benefit organisation run by its individual members. We formed after meeting at Hillcrest National STEM Boys Secondary School (formerly Hillcrest National Technical High School) in Livingstone, Zambia between 2000 and 2002. The bonds we formed there culminated in the formation of Hillcrest Ubuntu.
Our Vision & Philosophy
Ubuntu is a Bantu word summarised by the Zulu phrase Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu — "a person is a person through other people." Our vision is encapsulated by the phrase: “I am, because we are”. We believe that members should support one another through life's challenges and celebrations.
What We Do
Hillcrest Ubuntu aims to:
- Provide outreach programmes to Hillcrest School, including career counselling, guidance and mentorship.
- Provide financial support to vulnerable students for tuition and boarding fees.
- Support the school through fundraising and donations (library books, renovations, and administrative support).
- Ease the burden of funeral costs for our members and their loved ones.
- Protect members and their families from some of the uncertainties that funerals can create, and foster dignity in death.
- Support each other during difficult times in accordance with our cultural traditions and responsibilities.
Eligibility & Joining
At present the fund is open to members of the class of 2002 (those who started Grade 10 in the year 2000). This may be reviewed in future.
